“Greece-Bulgaria” Programme
The eligible area of the programme is constituted by 7 administrative regions on the Greek side (Evros, Kavala*, Xanthi, Rodopi, Drama, Thessaloniki and Seres) and 4 on the Bulgarian side (Blagoevgrad, Smolyan, Kardzhali, Haskovo), while it covers an area of 40.202 square klm and 2.812.236 inhabitants.
The Strategic Objective of the programme is defined as being the:
- Promotion of the inter-state region by ensuring regional cohesion and by enhancing competitiveness
with Specific objectives being the following:
- Enhancement of Attractiveness of the Region through the Upgrade of the Quality of Life
- Improvement of Accessibility Structures and
- Improvement of Competiveness through the Promotion of Entrepreneurship, Establishment of Cooperation Networks and Investing in Human Resources.
For the implementation of the Programme the following Priority Axes have been set:
- Quality of Life: Upgrade and management of environmental and cultural elements, medical and social issues for the improvement of quality of life in the cross-border region and the well being of its inhabitants.
- Accessibility: Improvement of transportation and communication networks and ensuring the ease and safe circulation of goods, services and people within the cross-border region.
- Competitiveness and Human Resources: Stimulation of entrepreneurship, investing in human resources and promoting research and innovation, in order to increase competitiveness and to improve the financial and social development of the cross-border region.
- Technical Assistance: Support of the entire management and the smooth implementation of the Programme.
The total budget of the programme is 110.735.958 Euros, and is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
* the Prefecture of Kavala is included in the Programme as an adjacent area with total work expenses in the region not exceeding 20% of the total expenses of the programme.
