The 7.6 km extension of the line includes six new stations: Agia Varvara, Korydallos, Nikaia, Maniatika, Pireaus, Dimotiko Theatro (Municipal Theatre). The project also includes the procurement of series III trains to serve the needs of lines 2 and 3 of the Athens Metro. The project spans two programming periods: NSRF 2007–2013 and PA 2014–2020 and has two distinct phases.
The implementation of the 1st phase (NSRF 2007–2013) included preparatory work and the initial construction work for the extension, procurement of the trains, as well as procurement and installation of signalling and the main tasks related to the automated monitoring system. Also, the services of a technical consultant, expropriations, public utilities expenses, management expenses and monitoring of the 1st phase and further studies.
The implementation of the 2nd phase (PA 2014–2020) includes:
- completion of the remaining construction work;
- completion of the procurement process for the trains upon the payment of the guarantee;
- procurement and installation of a signalling system for the extension towards Piraeus, as well as the release of the guarantee concerning the signalling system for the 17 trains;
- the ATS application software for the stations, testing and documentation for upgrading the ATS system;
- procurement, installation and testing of the Passenger Information System (PIS);
- all the remaining electromechanical contracts: Building Automation and Control System (BACS), wireless communication system (TETRA), fare collection systems (FC) and procurement of gates;
- οther support actions including remaining utilities expenses, technical consultant services, publicity, as well as management and supervision expenses.
Benefits: The construction of the Metro expansion to Piraeus will serve 132,000 passengers daily, whilst the travel time from the port to the airport will be reduced to only 45 minutes. Its operation will reduce daily traffic by approximately 23,000 private vehicles, resulting in a corresponding reduction of CO2 emissions by 120 tonnes daily.
