Restoration of the ancient theatre of Aptera

The theatre of Aptera is located in Paleokastro, in the Municipality of Souda, Chania Prefecture. The building was constructed in two phases: the first dates back to the Hellenistic period and the second to the 1st century AD.

For restoration of the ancient theatre of Aptera, its showcasing, and moderate development of the area surrounding it, the following work was carried out: Cleaning of vegetation, demolition of limekiln, reinforcement. Test cuts in the amphitheatre area, backfill work in the surrounding area and within the monument. Maintenance of moveable archaeological finds. Maintenance of architectural members, carving, installation onto the monument, surveying & indexing. Renovation of the foundation in the amphitheatre area, where no seats were preserved, and then covered with sterile soil. Photographing and drafted documentation, aerial photographing, informational signs. Creation of posters, an electronic application for tablets, a bilingual video, and organisation of a workshop to present the results of the project. Installation of a memorial plaque. Reconfiguration of the surrounding area, creation of walkways, construction of two rest spots.

Benefits: The archaeological site has become visitable and the theatre already attracts many visitors.

Budget: €2,440,000
