Restoration of the fortification monuments in the pier of the medieval harbour of Rhodes

The project included interventions at the Mills and St. Nicholas piers, of the medieval harbour of Rhodes. On the pier of Mills, a protection zone is provided as a circumferential promenade and enhancement of the monument. Moreover, the project included fixation and restoration of the eastern wall (250m long), emergency rescue operations in the whole medieval construction of the pier along with information and direction operations of visitors in the tourist port. On the pier of St. Nicholas restoration was conducted of the two-storey emplacement as well as improvement of access to the main tower in eastern Zacosta rampart. Visitors are informed and directed to rehabilitated spaces with provision of access for people with a disability. Restoration for educational was also applied on selected fortification components, including the tower-like access to the main tower to the east of the Zacosta bastion, deposing tottering dome of the late Ottoman bastion in the southwest of Zacosta and coating of the area with dirt floor texture.

Benefits: Smooth viewing of the ancient fortification construction in order to provide guests with an overall perception of the site. Transformation of a depressed and inaccessible area into a vital area of ​​the city which is one of the most important tourist ports in the Mediterranean.
